“Orange Mocha Frappuccino”

#128: Zoolander, 2001
In 1994, Starbucks Coffee acquired Coffee Connection, an Eastern Massachusetts coffee chain that was known for its trademark “Frappuccino” drink, fusing the espresso-laden flavor of a frothy cappuccino with the dense sweetness of a classic New England milkshake “frappe”. The “Frappuccino” or “Frap” has become synonymous with the Starbucks brand aesthetic, which walks a fine line between classic Seattle-inspired coffee shop and saccharin-induced, fast-food fare. While known as a satisfying sweet treat (when consumed in moderation), a standard size Frappuccino offers about 50 grams of sugar mixed with 1-3 shots of espresso. When consumed, the body will most likely experience a heightened jolt of energy, adrenaline, and euphoria, inevitably followed by a debilitating crash. This rapid fluctuation of highs and lows from a single beverage could potentially influence one’s behavior and choices, clouding judgement, distorting emotions, and introducing an unnecessary level of chaos, like lighting a cigarette after a “gas fight” with friends.
